What comics can I jump into this week?! Week of 06/22/2020

Posted by David Gage on

Another week, another great time to jump into comics! For those of you who have always wanted to start reading comics (or older readers who want to start a new series), but find it all too overwhelming, This blog is here to help!

In this weekly blog, I list the best starting places for readers this week. Whether it’s jumping into a DC or Marvel comic that is a hundred issues in or finding that awesome new #1 issue, I want to help new and old readers alike.

This blog is broken up into four sections. First I start with the easy stuff, new #1’s. Then I move on to issues from ongoing series that are starting a new storyline or are self-contained stories. Next, I list all new first volume manga. The final section of the blog is for any issues or manga volumes that may not be the best place to start, but the issues or volumes before it are still available on our site www.gagescomicpages.com and could therefore be caught up on.

Quick disclaimer, I only focus on new issues that we’re carrying in our online shop. There are many other new titles out every week, so if there’s a particular one you were looking for, just message us through the site or send an email to customerservice@gagescomicpages.com. I can send you additional information on the title and can potentially order it for you if you’re interested. Also, feel free to send any other questions or suggestions you may have.

Now read on to find that new comic you’ve been looking for!

New #1’s

Milestones In History #1

  • This is a One-Shot 80-page anthology of true Black History stories, narrated by characters from the Milestone Universe. If you don’t know who they are, this is a great issue to find out!
  • Description: Written by Reginald Hudlin, Alice Randall, Toure, Michael Harriot, and more. Art by Various Celebrate Black History Month the Milestone way, as the superpowered citizens of Dakota (including Static, Icon, Rocket, Hardware, and more) narrate the true stories of Black trailblazers from across human history! Witness the military campaigns of Hannibal and the Queen of Sheba, the literary accomplishments of Alexandre Dumas, the World War One dogfights of Eugene Bullard against the legendary Red Baron, and many, many more, all written and drawn by a who's-who of comics and literary talent!

Dark Crisis Young Justice #1

  • It’s going to be a 6 issue series tying into Dark Crisis. Even though it ties into the big event, it will be its own self-contained story. Reading Dark Crisis along with it will definitely help give it context, but you should still be able to enjoy it without the main event. I would still suggest at least looking up a quick synopsis on what’s happening in the main story-line just to make sure you’re not missing anything.
  • Description: Crises have always had devastating impacts on the generation of heroes that make up Young Justice, and Dark Crisis will hit them even harder. Tim Drake, Impulse, and Superboy go missing during the Justice League’s funeral. The only person concerned enough to find them? Cassie Sandsmark, a.k.a Wonder Girl. But...the three boys of Young Justice aren’t on this Earth anymore...they’re on the world of their dreams, one they may never want to leave!

Black Adam #1

  • Get to know Black Adam before the new movie with the Rock comes out!
  • Description: There is no forgiveness for Black Adam. This is the reality Teth-Adam, immortal man of indomitable will, must face when he discovers he has been infected with an incurable plague destroying his immortality. Haunted by the specter of centuries of dark deeds, Black Adam transfers his powers to a worthy successor who will redeem Adam’s legacy and defend their ancestral homeland of Kahndaq, only to subsequently become mystically handcuffed to him when Adam’s plague is arrested, giving birth to perhaps the most volatile and dysfunctional super-team in DC history! Powered by stunning art by Rafa Sandoval (Justice League) and breathtaking painted covers by Irvin Rodriguez (Detective Comics), writer Christopher Priest (Deathstroke, Justice League) brings his trademark wit and skill for character deconstruction to an entirely fresh examination of the man you love to hate! Get ready to ride the lightning!

Aquaman & The Flash Voidsong #1

  • This is a 3 issue mini-series. This is a great series if you love either of these characters and has no tie-ins to any current runs or events.
  • Description: They descend suddenly from the stars, in monumental ships like floating cathedrals. They are touched by a dark and terrible force from beyond our reality, silent but for the one note they emit that freezes all motion. Their mission: to drain the Earth of all its kinetic energy and leave it a lifeless husk. They never expected anyone could escape their song—but the Flash was in the Speed Force when they struck, and Aquaman was in the deepest ravine far below the ocean’s floor. These heroes have little in common. They’ve rarely even fought side by side without their fellow Justice League members. Now they must find a way to work together against impossible odds to save the world and the people they love.

Punisher War Journal Blitz #1

  • New series launch! This makes a great companion to the main series but it can also be enjoyed on its own.
  • Description: THE TRICK IS TO INVENT A WAR WORTH FIGHTING.Finn Fratz knows that if you want people to hate each other, a Banner cannon in the right pair of hands goes a long way. The aging war profiteer earned his spot on the Punisher's kill list well before he adopted the moniker Hate-Monger, but he has proven an elusive man. Now, with the Hand at his disposal, Frank Castle is ready to smoke him out. But not only has Hate-Monger gone to ground, he's fighting back. Good for him. It's not going to change anything but the death toll. Torunn Grønbekk and Lan Medina join forces to bring you the first of three thrilling tales from between the pages of PUNISHER, exploring Frank's new modus operandi through some of his deadliest missions yet…

New Fantastic Four #1

  • This is a new series launch of an old fan-favorite group!
  • Description: SPIDER-MAN! GHOST RIDER! WOLVERINE! HULK! When these unlikely heroes first banded together to become the NEW FANTASTIC FOUR, they made Marvel history. Now this fan-favorite team returns in an all-new adventure written by Peter David! Set shortly after the events of the group's first appearance, brace yourself for a wild ride and guest stars aplenty - including the original FF. • This is the first in a line of 3 one-shots with a Moon Girl team up. If you’re a fan of Moon Girl or want to learn more about her, these will be great issues for you.

    New Manga

    Our Colors Graphic Novel

    • From PRH: Highly anticipated follow up from the creator of My Brother’s Husband! The complete story in this one 500 page volume. One of the most exciting manga offerings of the summer.
    • Description: Set in contemporary suburban Japan, Our Colors is the story of Sora Itoda, a sixteen-year-old aspiring painter who experiences his world in synesthetic hues of blues and reds and is governed by the emotional turbulence of being a teenager. He wants to live honestly as a young gay man in high school, but that is still not acceptable in Japanese society. His best friend and childhood confidante is Nao, a young woman whom everyone thinks is (or should be) his girlfriend, and it would be the easiest thing to play along—she knows he’s gay but knows, too, how difficult it is to live one’s truth in his situation. Sora’s world changes forever when he meets Mr. Amamiya, a middle-aged gentleman who is the owner and proprietor of a local coffee shop and is completely, unapologetically out as a gay man. A mentorship and platonic friendship ensues as Sora comes out to him and agrees to paint a mural in the shop, and Mr. Amamiya counsels Sora about how to deal with who he is. But it won’t be easy. Mr. Amamiya paid a high price for his freedom of identity, and when a figure from his past suddenly appears, the situation becomes a vivid example of just how complicated life can be.

To survive this battle royale, the last striker standing will have to out-muscle and out-ego everyone who stands in his way!
